Tour Description:

A land where time seems to follow different rules, Maramureș is more than a place — it is a state of mind. Here, traditions are not reconstructed but lived, while the landscape becomes the backdrop for a world shaped by people, nature, and customs preserved for centuries.

It is a place where photography is not only about composition, but also about connection — with the land, the people, and their stories.

Morning on the Vaser Valley — at the depot We begin early, in the cold air of the morning, where the steam train of the Vaser Valley prepares to depart from Vișeu de Sus. One long whistle, then a short one — and the train slowly sets off on a private charter run dedicated exclusively to our group.

We travel deep into the wild Vaser Valley, beyond Botizu. Morning light filters through the steam of the locomotive, while the slow rhythm of the train allows us to carefully build each frame. We look for:

  • the steam train integrated into the natural landscape

  • side-lit steam contrasting with the forest

  • dynamic details captured in slow motion

Photography in the rhythm of the train Along the route, we constantly alternate between movement and stops. The train slows down, stops, and gives us time to get off and position ourselves.

We descend, wait, anticipate. Then the locomotive reverses and comes back toward us — hissing, creaking, in a completely authentic spectacle.

We photograph from varied perspectives:

  • from embankments and small elevated points

  • beneath bridges or inside tight curves

  • in wide frames or compressed details

It is a day where the rhythm is dictated by the train, and photography becomes an exercise in timing and observation.

Traditional life in Maramureș‍ ‍After the mountain railway experience, we establish our base in Ieud — one of the most authentic and photogenic villages in Romania.

Here, exploration takes on another dimension. The subjects are no longer moving, but layered in depth and atmosphere. Photographic themes:

  • wooden architecture and the atmosphere around the Wooden Churches of Maramureș

  • community life, especially during market days in Botiza

  • traditional clothing and authentic moments during religious services

These are frames where discretion and respect become essential, and photography is built through closeness and understanding.

The rhythm of the day The tour is designed around a balanced rhythm that follows both the light and village life. There is time for:

  • unhurried exploration

  • returning to the same places under different light

  • observation and adaptation to the moment

Each moment becomes part of a larger story, not just an isolated image.

Sunrise and sunset light‍ ‍Mornings and evenings are the key moments for photography in Maramureș. This is when:

  • the hills slowly illuminate in warm tones

  • smoke rises gently from the households

  • wooden shingle roofs gain texture and depth

Sunsets close the day in soft light, simplifying compositions and bringing visual coherence to the entire experience.

About the experience This PhotoTOUR is a meeting point between nature, tradition, and photography. From the dynamic movement of the steam train on the Vaser Valley to the quiet atmosphere of Maramureș villages, each day brings a different type of subject and a different visual approach. It is an experience built around authenticity — a place where the image is not only composed, but truly lived.
